Sun Protection Is Not Seasonal: Your Everyday Guide to Sunscreen & SPF

It’s a common myth that sunscreen is only needed on bright, sunny days, but in truth, sun protection should be a daily habit, no matter the weather or whether you’re mostly indoors. Harmful UV rays are present year-round and can penetrate clouds and even glass, making sunscreen an essential part of everyday skincare. Regular use helps prevent premature ageing, pigmentation, sunburn, and most importantly, lowers the risk of skin cancer, keeping your skin healthy and radiant over time.

Sunscreen works by protecting the skin from ultraviolet radiation, mainly UVA rays, which penetrate deeper and cause wrinkles, fine lines, and long-term damage, and UVB rays, which affect the surface and are responsible for sunburn and increased cancer risk. This is where SPF, or Sun Protection Factor, becomes important—it measures protection against UVB rays. For example, SPF 30 blocks about 97% of UVB rays, while SPF 50 blocks around 98%, but no sunscreen offers 100% protection, which is why reapplication every two hours, especially after sweating or swimming, is crucial. Choosing a broad-spectrum sunscreen ensures coverage against both UVA and UVB rays for complete protection. Sunscreens also come in two main types: chemical sunscreens, which absorb UV rays and convert them into heat, and mineral (physical) sunscreens, which reflect and scatter rays away from the skin—both are effective when used correctly and can be chosen based on skin type and personal preference. For best results, sunscreen should be applied generously to all exposed areas like the face, neck, ears, and hands, at least 15 minutes before sun exposure, and used as the final step of your morning skincare routine. Clearing common myths is equally important—UV rays can reach your skin on cloudy days, indoors near windows, and higher SPF does not mean all-day protection. Small daily habits, when done consistently, can make a big difference in keeping your skin protected, youthful, and glowing throughout the year.
